Healing is an important topic this week, especially with the grounding energy of the Full Moon in Taurus at the end of the week. Right now, and for the foreseeable future, we all need an extra daily dose of grace, love, and a big, giant hug.
For many of us, healing is a key entry point to see our desires come to fruition. Now is the perfect time to reflect on what we believe, and why we believe it, and to ask some illuminating questions that could bring us into more ease, peace, joy, and faith.
You’ve heard of the placebo effect. You take something that “cures” you of a condition simply because you were told it would, and you believed the person who told you because they were a trusted source! But in reality, the pill contained nothing but sugar. Fascinating, right?
On the other hand, imagine a doctor you trust telling you that you have an incurable disease. You believe it, and over time, you get sicker and sicker until you die. Afterward, your family finds out you didn’t have that disease after all. This is an example of the “nocebo” effect, where you expect the worst because a trusted person told you it would happen.
See how our beliefs shape the way we see and experience the world? Powerful stuff.
If we think of healing as a way for us to clean up our version of what is true for us, we can begin to see the world through a different lens. Our perception and perspective change, and as we rehearse these new beliefs, they gradually shape our reality. Over time, this becomes the reality we inhabit.
We can often tell when we’ve been infected by a “thought virus,” both personally and collectively. Lately, a few intense ones have been circulating, calling us to shine a light on them. Who or what do we give our power to? TikTok? Politicians? The Internet? “I saw it there so it must be true!” We then experience all that comes with that.
Often, what we need to heal from is a form of distorted conditioning— a warped view of reality that’s fed to us until it becomes part of us. Hello algorithms, ancestors, family beliefs, social environments, etc. This conditioning is often reinforced by fear, or we recreate it because it feels familiar, and stepping into the unknown feels way too scary.
On that note, if you’re feeling ready to explore healing in a compassionate, deeply grounded way, I want to share a resource. Healing Rage, created by my dear friend and former coach, Ruth King, is both a class and book that guides you in working through anger, rage, fear, and frustration in a healthy, transformative way. Ruth is an extraordinary, compassionate, and wise guide for these times, and I can’t recommend her teachings enough. Her insights have been an anchor for me, and she’s the person I turn to when I need deep clarity and healing.
Our thoughts, beliefs, and expectations are crucial in the creative process. And, we’re not alone in the reality construction. We co-create with a responsive, interactive universe that consistently presents evidence that matches our beliefs, no matter what they are, mirroring the frequency we broadcast. We attract and collaborate with others on the same frequency.
Then again there are others in our world broadcasting a signal not in alignment with ours.
Here’s a simple question to ask yourself: “What am I making this mean?” This can reveal a lot about our role in shaping our reality. It’s not really a “them” thing. We are the suggestible ones.
I know this sounds pretty heady, but I had a hilarious experience yesterday that beautifully explains what I’m trying to say.
I was having coffee with a friend, talking about this very thing. The cafe makes its own chocolate, so I decided I’d get us four pieces to try. I noticed they had a spicy chocolate option (I had a bad experience with this kind in the past), so I avoided it and picked what I thought was just simple chocolate.
I went back to the table, in what I can only describe as a slow-motion comedy scene, brought the chocolate to my mouth. On the way, I noticed red dust on it that looked just like cayenne pepper, which I am allergic to. I convinced myself it WAS cayenne pepper. But the chocoholic in me bit in any way. Panic bells went off in my head, and my taste buds went into alarm mode as I felt my tongue burning and swelling. I looked at my friend and said, “Wow that is SO SPICY! My mouth is for real burning.”
She took a bite and said, “No actually it’s not.”
Surprised, I thought maybe she could handle the spice better than me. I called over the counter person and asked, “What’s is in this chocolate!? What is this red dust?” Knowing this is cayenne pepper, I awaited the spicy hot verdict and offer for refund.
“That’s just sugar dust,” they said.
“But don’t you sell the CHILE chocolate?” I asked.
“Oh, that’s a mistake! We haven’t had that in ages.”
My friend laughed at me as I took another bite. It was totally normal dark chocolate.
My conditioned expectation almost put me in a full-blown allergic reaction. I trusted the “red dust” and what I thought it meant.
Not real. Felt real. Not real. Hmmmmmm.
The Mind is a Magical Thing. Nocebos are real. It might be a good time for a gentle healing of the old noggin’ here and ask who has the real authority running the show.
I was trying to figure out a good way to end my endless thoughts here and my friend texted me the cutest meme that said, “Instead of worrying about what you can’t control, shift your energy to what you can create!”
Healing the mind is exactly about this. Surrendering to this truth and shifting to what you really want. Then acting on it.
