Hustle and Flow -The Fine Art of Being and Doing!

Updated: January 25, 2015

Dear spark of brilliant luminosity—that would be you

I’m sitting here slightly tired from the previous evening’s sneeze-a-thon thinking about self care and what that means beyond Kleenex and hot tea.

Away from all the obvious feed a cold starve a fever remedies, there is something so much deeper to contemplate.

Ever since I took out the foods I am sensitive to I don’t get sick hardly ever so I feel that this cold was a way that my Higher Self could get my little self to slow down to regroup and get into alignment.

I couldn’t stop sneezing long enough to have a solid conversation so I even had to cancel clients, and although I am in the thick of writing a new book, also had to allow nothing to happen with that too.
What I was doing wasn’t working anyway.

I don’t know about you, but I’m the kind of person that doesn’t have an “off” button that actually works. I need to be conscious of slowing down otherwise I’d stay in learning, producing, doing and giving mode- a total non- stop Hustle.

This I’m aware has to do with an old wound that says I better be doing something useful for you if I’m going to take up space on this planet.
I understand this is an ego construct to keep me separate from my soul by identifying as a human doing rather than a human being.
And to remain in balance and in alignment with the laws of the universe Hustle needs to be accompanied by Flow or kaboom – something will take you down until you slow down.

Sniffle sneeze, snort, ach-chooooo, repeat

Does that ever happen to you?

Do you get caught up in doing, making plans about doing, thinking about what you’ll achieve if you do, be ambitious about doing, panic if you’re not doing, and wonder what you need to do next to get where you need to go? Are you ever driven by the fear if you don’t do it now “it” will go away forever? Ever forget to slow down and rest in case you miss something, even an idea that might pass you by?

Here’s what I know for sure. Flow is about being empty, practicing the art of allowing, resting, being playful, sliding down the ice laughing after the big run. The welcoming of the soul in full receptivity is essential in order to make all that doing make sense.

Sometimes the best ideas come when you’re not looking, the Muse wakes up when you’re willing to play not when you’re relentless and demanding.

I can tell you Flow is essential for any creative endeavor. I confess I was feeling like the more I pushed and demanded my ideas be made known for my book the more I felt like I had nothing to say. I started having the worst anxiety in fact the more doing I was doing the more I helplessly turned into Prissy from Gone with The Wind crying “I don’t know nothin’ bout birthin babies!”

There the truth comes out. No good ideas ever again for me.

But…. Once I was forced to do nothing I began to tune into something meaningful that could only be delivered to me in the quiet and only when I stopped the doing of looking so hard for it. And of course it didn’t happen right away.

Letting go is as essential as moving forward. So with that bit of wisdom, I am still going to stay in the Flow for a while since I’m not in such a rush to get back to Hustle. It will come soon enough when it will be time. For now balance is the key.

Love to hear from you and how you do with Hustle and Flow!

Love love love you all… and remember… be Good to you!

Thank you Colette….this seems to be the story of my life.

As a result of a health collapse 2 years ago, I’ve been trying to balance doing with being, and figure out what foods I can eat that won’t cause further problems. It is hard to just “be” when things need done and deadlines are looming…and yes creative thinkinng suffers when I’m attempting to rush around. It seems there never is enough time – and if I stop doing , then I seem to have more pressure and rushing instead of flow when I get back to things. I know it is mostly perception that needs changed…some days that is easier than others.

Thanks agaian for your insights and readings, plus, I really enjoyed your TV show.

I have no problem with hustle at all, that means I have ample time for myself, sit on my couch, meditate, write boks, now I will get clients, and work with them and teach them how to be in the moment and how to take care of themselves, how not to be hard on themselves….

Life is too short to waste, we have this precious moments together so we cherish them…

About you, Collette, and all people out there, we can carve time for ourselves, like your baths
Colette, or a nature walk, or a tea pause during work time while you are at the office…Everyone needs time to play and everyone needs time alone doing their thing, which they enjoy the most…For me that is dancing also, and I go to dance classes….

Discover, enjoy yourselves on this beautiful Planet….Blessings, Love, B…..

Hi, I have to be very mindful not to over do it as I’ve suffered Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ ME twice. For me it occurs when I have been under a lot of stress for a long period. Luckily I am used to listening to my body and I make sure I eat nutritious foods and take my supplements.

This email came at just the right time for me it reinforced that my decision to cancel my morning appointment was the right decision.

    Thank you!

Ahhh..OMG this is what has just happened to me over the holidays and I fell into a trap – I got sick on Xmas Eve. But I work part time as an entertainer, and I had a new Years Eve gig and was in such a hurry to get better I tried every remedy I had to get through what I thought was just a chest cold/bronchitis. I felt guilty – like I was a bad person “how dare you get sick” ” you should know better “, “you don’t deserve to relax and sleep in bed” … old childhood programming and some “you practise new age thinking -why did you get sick??”……so I decided I would try a mustard pack on my chest…well in my feverish delirium I forgot to double /triple the cloth portion which was to be applied against my skin…woke up the next morning with serious burns on my chest….It was the rushing and pushing, trying to do everything that got me sick in the first place and in doing the same to recoup, I wounded myself even more….I now have I a big scar/reminder on my chest. I had the BIG AHA moment as I stared in the mirror and I heard it clearly “I cannot rush this healing. My guides have been trying to get me to SLOW DOWN!!!!! NOW DO YOU GET IT ?!!!” Oh yes I got it . I was shocked, stunned and so I spent the next few days with PJ’s, fuzzy socks, on the couch with TV remote, teas, lemon drinks (all a first for me) and let my body heal IN ITS OWN TIME….trusting that I would be better to sing on New Years Eve and I was. So from that point on, until now, I try to start my day as I make my to-do list (yes I still need to do that) but I only expect myself to do 2-3 things instead of 10-11…if I feel like it….and it feels right

Great story, Maria: Home is where the Heart is … Like Colette stated, in essence, “where is the off switch”? If it cannot be shut-off then a balance needs to occur for a “smooth ride” like going with the flow or just being. Traditionally, being orderly/progressive creates to-do-lists and is all-good until taken to an extreme; the extreme will be initiated by individuals. Making a list is like an inventory or what needs to be done. That expectation of completing it all in a day might be warped however learning a life’s lesson that humans need help if that is to be achieved or accepting the to-do-list will be ongoing [of course] a few tasks at a time. An evolvement of the self, that can be healing, once knowledge of how-to is earned – payment is when others are helped by it. In your case, Maria, you sang!

      Sounds, healthy. Voice Blessings!

Hi Colette, thank you for your beautiful reminder today. I can too easily get caught up in going, going, going and “trying” to make things happen. I feel depleted and certainly not guided. I’m building my healthy coaching business and feeling lost and insecure regarding attracting clients. I haven’t allowed myself to relax and enjoy life. I will move forward in my business with flow and allowing. Blessings.

    Hi Colette!
Boy do I totally get where your coming from and thanks for sharing.
I’m totally a go getter done girl too and I’m actually learning the fine art of flow, laughter lightness and fun and it feels great!
A lot has to do with connecting on with myself and asking the ? I learnt from u and that is: “Is this best for my highest being?” And pretty well most of the time it’s not.
Yesterday, I went to my mom and dads and of course the food my mom prepares is always great but not necessarily great for me.. And yet I ate and last night and this morning well let’s just say it wasn’t actually worth it. Quite often when I’m there I find myself shutting off the self control button and just eating, stuffing down the true self and letting my ego come out to play! So not in my best and highest good or for my highest self! Although I will say I did not leave there this time feeling emotionally drained and that’s a first as I have been keeping myself sealed up in my ball of light! I’m getting there and I want to thank u for your wonderful wisdom and guiding support. I have 2 of the decks u created and everyday I do a reading for myself. It’s inspiring and also comforting!
I could totally give u my homemade cold remedy medicine that works like a charm! Please take care and enjoy the flow! Xo

Hi Colette, everything you have just mentioned above rings true for me. I feel guilty If am not coming up with new ideas about how to channel my desires to take my tutoring to a different level. I get caught up with other things, like what I would like to cook for dinner two nights after today. always trying to stay busy on being productive. The time for slowing down me is when I start not to focus so much on anything specific such my dreams, plans and hopes, but I get into day dreaming mode when I start to feel tired and drained. So is time for me to slow down before something not so good happens. Is good to be here among good people. thank you Colette for creating a great place to share ourselves. Send you and everyone else lots of love!!!

    Hi Colette,

Sure hope that this finds you feeling much better. What I have learned, and was given confirmation from yo, is that if I quiet my mind, take a few deep breaths and just let things flow according to the plan of the universe, things become productive again. Bless you for all wisdom that you and your group have shared with me.

Sorry you are “under the weather.” Wonder where that saying originated from?
It is a challenge to let go, to allow, to make time, or more accurately to savor time.
I struggle with some discomfort (guilt) regarding not being engaged all the time since
being laid off from a 12 year history with one company. It was very difficult to face the
EMPTY , and there was much sadness to release. However having moved through all of
that and some very profound healing as a result; there is a deeper, more integrated being
that emerged from the process of “dying.” The dismantling of a former EGO was a painful
reality I needed to undergo. The good news is that I no longer need all of that protection.
I just AM. What I needed to learn was to appreciate and value who I AM just for the sheer
truth of being unlike no other person. That was the longest journey for me, becoming comfortable
in my soul. I can happily say that I enjoy “being” more than ever before. I can still be professional
but can also allow for playful and include this through the journey. I took myself way too seriously
for all of the years that I did have a full-time work commitment, and I suppose that I perceived
myself to be really important; but the truth underneath the old structure was that I was so lonely
and felt so distant from people in other ways. I AM just a mere mortal. So tumbling was humbling
and I am so relieved that I don’t need to carry this armoured version around with me. It is necessary
for balance and for integration to have the ebb AND flow. In fact it isn’t possible to embrace one side
without the other. Thank you so much Colette. This is a very thought-provoking topic.
This is what a dear friend would say when someone sneezed. (She was Irish)
“BLESS YOU. May the devil miss you; may you be an hour in heaven before he knows that you’re dead. ”

I went from always having to do something to justify my existence to now procrastinating so much I never get anything finished. Yesterday I promised myself I would get up early and get my blog done so I could work on rearranging my bedroom to allow for better flow … so I overslept because I stayed up late to watch the Pro Bowl and this morning when I got up, my toilet is backed up and the landlord already left for work so I’ll have to be creative until he gets home. Then from seemingly out of nowhere (except we all know it’s not nowhere but somewhere), an idea for this week’s blog came to me: what do we do when life gets “backed up” (don’t ya love the potty humor?). Go with the flow, ask for help and be creative until it gets here – just like my landlord. Hope you feel better. Try honey, lemon and tumeric in your tea. Love ya, and, oh, by the way, you rock!

    Hi Colette
What you have written is exactly what I needed to read today. I also have been struggling with the same thing. I sometimes feel guilty if I am not doing something productive. I know that we have to have a balance in our lives and in the past I would make a list of what I needed to do and get it done. When I had new ideas I would apply them. This seem to work great for me. When things got tough I would meditate and quiet the mind and it worked, I would get things done.

Lately I have had a tough time getting back into the swing of things especially since the holidays. I have spoken to other people and they seem to feel the same way. I thought it was just me but I see that I am not alone. I have to stop being hard on myself and continue to quiet my mind and take it one step at a time and trust that in the end it will all come to be. Thank you for sharing.

LOVE. Colette, be well soon. Health Blessings : )

“Going with the flow” has been with me a long time as the saying goes. For me it is fitting into the molds of expectations when working on a course at school, seeking employment, what I should be doing around the house and why is it taking so long to get started. The ideas are present however stress of the juggle dominates. I see my inability to quickly bounce back between the physical demand of three 50 lbs pups and the mindful assignments of learning at school. I try to calm down into “mind mode” after chasing the pups down from their outside time [of course, they get into digging so I have to supervise them].

I do well when my day is all “on the go” physically demanding; studying even though physically stagnant except for capturing what the mind is thinking it is harder to maintain an overall healthy “being”. Everyone’s case will be unique. I noticed I am busy trying to unwind after dealing with the hyper pups (two overactive 1-1/2 year old’s). I spend my energy grasping to keep them out of the vet’s reach, sort to speak. If anyone has the time to send Pup Obedience or Pup Anxiety Blessings (their hyper world is holding me back from fulfilling prior commitments to myself). I need to find a peaceful flow with these two. I have some possibilities regarding the girl’s anxiety that might be the root of the overall flow of our team but it breaks my heart to alter her with any supplements that just wear off. I was hoping time would have mellowed her or she would catch on to commands but nature has her anxious. She is a communicator.

Any long-term healing blessings would be appreciated : ) LOVE

I love how this Universe works. I have been caught up in the Hustle and a short week ago my neck and upper back spasms acted up. Sure enough I pushed through the pain last week and ended up having to take today off for the same problem. I definitely have that same wound you spoke of – if I am going to take space here I must do something useful. I feel like I am hitting a breaking point where I need to either take care of myself or suffer the consequences of years of neglect. Thank you so much for sharing and for giving me yet another wake up call. Love and light to you always 🙂

I can relate to this! Most of the time I am balanced and I never get sick. As the holidays approached I started to make bad food choices, stayed up late, got up early and ran non stop to try and make the holidays perfect for my family. About midnight on Christmas night the fever hit and didn’t let up for three days. I stayed in the bed and meditated, did EFT and read. During that time I was able to reflect on what I had done to myself and now have a plan to make sure it doesn’t happen again. I know I will slip up from time to time but I don’t think I will ever run myself into the ground as I did this past Christmas. Love everything you write, especially about feeling too much. That is another area where I can relate!

I just flashed on an image a friend posted on Instagram of a bee landing in his coffee. I think it is a good metaphor for that impatience we feel for the new year to unfold. The coffee=artificial stimulation, the bee=just be and allow! Like the queen bee expecting the worker bees will accomplish all their tasks and the action part is sweet and light with an amber glow 🙂 So thankful for the sweetness and light you help to weave in my life Colette.

I have two words—–Mecury Retrograde——–well I have MORE words, but I’ve always wanted to say that. Ha! Funny how the planetary pile-up will throw you back in bed, isn’t it? It the old parable about the “Wasted Talents”. If we don’t use it, we will loose it. But what was missed in that story is the fact that rest and nurturing is just as important as labor and pruning. The cycles of all things provide for that. What makes us think that doesn’t apply to us? Human being is (a) STILL human doing. (Loved when you said that) And everything I tried to write in the past few weeks to join in this conversation wasn’t working for me.
Hope the sniffles shuffle themselves along soon!

Wow! I feel like the cards were picked just for me!! While I’ve never had a problem turning the switch ‘off’, it’s only been in the last few years I’ve learned this ‘off’ is the time to really take care of me…which I now do. But the cards, again, wow!! I was supposed to be on a trip this week, first to Vegas to help a friend celebrate her birthday then off to Sedona for a 5 day class…so I would be really ‘on’ and going, going, going. Well, the Universe had other plans…my 79 yr old mom lives with me but is very independent. Long story short, she has a fracture of one of the bony processes of one of her lumbar vertebrae, not dangerous but very painful, needs rest, limited bending/lifting, etc. So I’m home on a ‘stay’-cation this week and next week. So, the Web Weaver…obviously I thought I was going on a trip but the universe had other plans, I will go with the flow & get things done at home that take longer than a weekend & sit back & see what the universe has planned for me; the Lady of the Gift…I am already a generous person but have had to learn to set boundaries over the years & learn to be generous with myself for myself, then my light can shine more genuinely; The Spiral Dancer reversed…hello!! Will definitely be sitting out the dance this week, no travel, no class, which will give me time to sit back & observe & review what I need to do to get my healing studio finished and ready this year (in my enclosed, finished & heated garage!). And the Swan Queen…helping me trust my gut/intuition & Spirit to lead me in the right direction to bring into BEing my healing energy practice for myself & others.

Sending you lots of healing loving energy Colette!!

Hope you are feeling better soon! You must be at the edge of something amazing that is coming your way. A cold is like a delayed New Year’s eve for the body…an out with the old, in with the new. Picture your new cells in this new year having a big ticker-tape parade inside your body…bye to old beliefs and systems that don’t serve the good stuff coming around the corner. This cold is a big exfoliating of the dead, stagnant, and unusable parts of your beautiful self in order to make room for the fresh, the alive, and the inspired parts. I wish you a speedy recovery and rebirth! You have been one of the top 5 teachers in my life and I am so grateful for all that you have given me. Blessings to a generous and kind mentor.

Oddly I have been stationary for over 3 years since I have quite my previous job. I took a year to recoup my energy from last bad experience I had a work and then continued to just keep doing which was relaxing. It was hard financially but I can’t say that I didn’t get to slow down enough to finish my graduate degree and not let my stress from my previous job affect my performance in school which made a huge difference in me being able to accomplish more and do better. I kept having blocks and oddly I know this is not a time to start something new but a new job came a long and it seems to be a better fit for my desires. I have a nice boss who I really like and it seems that I am going to help some people to ease their burdens or at least hope to. I am not used to the flexibility that this job brings which kind of blows me away. It’s definitely a new experience. It’s sometimes we need to slow down for reasons but then things will again pick up when necessary 🙂

    Colette,

I find this post interesting; in all that I’ve read and studied about our relationship with Spirit, even though we have free will there seems to be a “jump or be pushed” dynamic in the Universe. Recently my cousin was trying to be everything to everyone. He was going to expand his business but he wasn’t taking care of himself. He is health conscious and always works out, but he is one of the healthiest sick people I’ve ever known! 😛 I told him he needed to slow down and take care of himself; he needed to slow down or Spirit with make you slow down! He needed to rest and recover for these new changes that were coming or he was going to break down and not be able to do anything.

I think that’s what is going on here; we just had a new moon (new beginnings) in Aquarius. Aquarius, being a fixed air sign, is one of freedom. Aquarians march to the beat of their own drum and are stubborn in their pursuits. The water bearer likes to wash away the past to make room for the new. Uranus, the planet that rules Aquarius, is in the fire cardinal sign Aries; Aries being the first planet in the zodiac is focused on the “me”.
“I want it and I want it now” or “Let’s go now” is what Aries says. Uranus is being squared by Pluto, the planet that rules Scorpio. Scorpio is the sign of change and transformation. Pluto acts like the Phoenix and makes something new that rises out of the things it destroys. It goes deep, connecting to the most inner part of the psyche. Think of spring cleaning; Pluto cleans out the things that you don’t need to make room for new things, new endeavors. Pluto is in Capricorn, Capricorn wants to make Pluto have structure. It creates a plan for the change that Pluto wants to make. Think of demolishing a building to make room for a new one; you can’t just put explosives in it to blow it up. You might end up damaging something you want to keep so the contractor has a blueprint to follow in order to keep a big picture on the project. Since Pluto and Uranus are outer planets (I still call Pluto a planet 😛 ) this aspect will last for a while. The Mercury retrograde is in Aquarius making us review these actions before we take them.

To sum it up, at the beginning of a New Year we have a new moon (new beginnings) in Aquarius (freedom, stubbornness) along with Uranus (Aquarius ruler, unpredictable change) in Aries (I want action now) squaring Pluto (transformations, deep inner psyche) in Capricorn (structure). Mercury is in retrograde in Aquarius. It is the time for change, time for new things, new projects, but before you jump into them Mercury retrograde is making you
“pump the brakes” and read “The Map” (see what I did there? 😉 ) before you embark on your change so you don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater. The changes in your life may be so important that Spirit will slow you down with developing colds, aches and pains, disrupting means of travel and communications, all of the things a Mercury retrograde brings so that you have a clear plan for the future, as well as making you rest and recover so that you have the energy to enjoy and complete your new project (Mercury rules Virgo that rules the 6th house of work and health). I even drew some Oracle cards that seem to say this to me; I plan to submit them for your analysis in the Oracle card section.

I hope this helps someone; it’s just some of the things I’ve observed that are going on in the heavens. Good luck Colette with the new book, I can’t wait to read it. Good luck to all who are embarking on new endeavors and be sure to rest and make a clear plan before you begin! 🙂

    Best wishes,

    Eric

As a Virgo sun sign and four other planets in Virgo (ruled by Mercury) one could simply look at my chart and see that I’m greatly affected by a Mercury retrograde. I looked at Colette and Robert’s video on Jupiter in Leo and also noticed that Jupiter is trined (harmonious aspect) by Uranus, both in fire signs. I would think that this is more validation that changes are coming. Uranus being the higher octave of Mercury and ruling electricity (just look at the wavy lines that symbolize Aquarius) and being unpredictable I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of people had problems with their phones, computers, TVs, and other electrical appliances during this retrograde. Uranus rules intuition so there may be “ah ha” ideas that come during this time, but they shouldn’t be acted on until the retrograde ends.

I understand that during a retrograde that no contracts or major decisions or purchases should be made. If it must happen then make sure he “i”s are dotted and the “t”s are crossed. I was also told not to begin “new” things during a retrograde, but it will be ok if it was already being worked on. (Enter the Virgoan analysis) What does “being worked on” mean? Can it be pursued if it had already been formulated in a thought or must a “physical” construction be started? I also heard that the “new” idea must not be attempted until Mercury returns to the position by degree that it was before it went retrograde; is this true? Any “black belt” astrologers who would like to feedback on this I’d appreciate it. I have some work that I need to do on my parent’s electrical outlets and would like to know when I could do it with minimum risk of rework. 🙂

Thank you so much for the positive feedback; it is greatly appreciated 🙂

        Interesting questions Eric:
I cannot answer them however sharing your personal knowledge is very helpful in understanding how Mercury affects all the star signs. I cannot even tell anyone what time I was born. Wondering if they really put the time of birth on somekind of archive at the hospital.

        Thanks.

      Eric:

To me all the astrology is complicated [I do identify constellations in the night sky – astonomy] however I am understanding that Mercury is the “messenger” as RO calls it. What do you know about the messenger, I am eager more explanation but cannot delve deeper into some products offered via Colette’s link.
      Thanks : )

When I started studying astrology my cousin introduced me to it. I just got some books and started learning the basics. I’ll try to convey what I learned:

Think of it like forecasting the weather; if you’re outside during the day and it starts getting dark chances are it is getting ready to storm. If the wind is blowing the storm is getting closer. Looking at a barometer you will be able to see weather changes farther in advance; having a thermometer will confirm these changes. Looking at a satellite image will give you a bigger picture of the weather patterns. Looking at a Doppler radar will show you characteristics of an approaching storm so you will know how far it is away, how severe it will be, and how long it will last. Even with all of these tools the forecast still can be wrong; not because of the tools but because of the misinterpretation of the information that the tools give. Some forecasters prefer using one tool over another, but in making a forecast without using all tools for validation the forecaster is seeing only part of the picture.

It is the same way with astrology, and I would say it works similarly with other intuitives. Whether it is using astrology, numerology, tarot, i-ching, or other “forecasting” methods the forecast is only as good as the person interpreting the information. With astrology most people know their sun sign (I’m a Cancer, Leo, etc.) but that doesn’t tell the whole story. Many people can read their sun sign horoscope and say that it doesn’t sound anything like them. They are not getting the whole picture because they haven’t looked at the rest of their chart. I’ve had my chart read and it is accurate, sometimes frighteningly so. Some readers can look at a chart and tell when events of your life will happen to within a few days; my “radar” only goes out to a couple of months and I can tell you “something” is going to happen, but getting better 🙂

Just as I broke down the planets and signs above I created a picture based on the meaning of the planets. Sometimes the the picture jumps out at you from the chart and it just makes sense. Sometimes I will look at a chart and it makes me tired or I can feel things about the person. It’s strange, I will read a few charts and will have to stop because I feel their depression or pain and won’t look at charts for a while. I don’t know if Colette will let me post about other sites or authors but there are a few out there that I have read and they helped me. On some sites people post their charts for others to read. That’s where I’ll practice to see how I’m interpreting charts.

Hopefully I answered your question. There are whole books about planets and other events like eclipses. Generally your birth time is on your birth records somewhere. You need a birthdate, birthtime, and birthplace to generate an accurate chart. For those who don’t know their birthtime there’s a process called rectification that can find your birth time based on major events in your life.

        I hope I’ve helped. 🙂

I was blessed with your reply (analogy, point, focus).
I learned that much more through your answers and enthusiasm/passion for astrology.

          Who doesn’t like positive affirmations! : )

I did find a couple of books at the library a few days ago that caught my eye.

Know that I will be looking further into needed facts to eventually attain a chart even though life has passed me by it might still be useful on the remaining part of the journey of “LOVE thyself” therefore in view of “to understand” everyone you met/will meet on the journey.

          Keep Sharing, Thanks.
          I really appreciate it …
